Kentucky Derby

The first Saturday in May is the Kentucky Derby. The Run for the Roses. The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports. The Parade of Hats at Churchill Downs.

So what did we do? Celebrated with an official Kentucky Derby party, of course! Matt and I started off the festivities by having some KFC for lunch. It is, after all, the official chicken of the Derby!

Then Caron, Anne and Emma came over to celebrate. We made some mint julep, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. Anne and I had attempted to make this once before, which turned out to be kind of a distaster last time. But I am happy to report that this time it turned out great.

First, you fill your glass with crushed ice.

Then you add three teaspons (or more) of the julep syrup.

And finally, you fill the rest of your glass with either whiskey (ginger ale) or bourbon (diet Coke).

And then you enjoy your official Derby drink! We unfortunately did not have official silver julep cups, but Anne has vowed to buy some when we go to Kentucky later this month. We also made sure to abide by the official dress code of the Derby. We even wore silk scarves in honor of the jockeys' silks.

It was quite delicious.

We had a nice array of Derby snacks, like Bourbon brownies, Derby dip, and Churchill Downs cheeseballs.

Since having a big, floppy hat is a must at the Derby, we decided to make our own. We used paper plates, ribbon, tissue paper, and whatever else we could find in my stash of old scrapbooking supplies.

Matt was a very good sport about the whole thing.

We made sure to have official racing forms so we could brush up on the horses, jockeys, owners, and trainers. We checked the Kentucky Derby website frequently for the most up-to-date stats. We also sang along to the official Kentucky Derby song, "My Old Kentucky Home." Here we are with our finished hats.

Matt was the bookie, so he took all our picks for Win, Place, and Show.

None of us picked the winning horse. It was quite the upset that a horse with 50-1 odds took the race. But it definately was the most exciting two minutes in sports! We also played a rousing game of horseshoes.

The horse Anne picked came in second, so she won the rose!

Anyway, it was a really fun party. It made me very excited to go to Kentucky in two weeks and actually go to Churchill Downs to see a live race!

Wow, you sure do know how to throw a party! Nice hats! They are much prettier than a lot of the actual hats!
Matt makes a great bookie! He ought to wear that hat all the time. :)
See you soon!
