A day at the races

For the past three or so summers, my friends and I have been trying to get to the Wyoming Downs to watch the horse races. Every year we seem to procrastinate so long that we miss our window of opportunity. (They do races every Saturday in the summer.) Anyway, we decided that 2008 was the year we were for sure going to do this. So last Saturday we made our way up to Evanston, Wyoming for the horse races. It was so much fun!

It was like a dream come true...they had bugle calls, an official program outlining the odds for each horse, Big Eds BBQ, a winner's circle, the jockeys, a countdown to post time, and lots more.

They had 9 different races--each race was 20 minutes apart. We were only able to stay for the first 5 races, but boy were they ever exciting!

Here is Rebecca studying the official program after each race to determine which horse would win the next one.

Here is Rebecca's horse in the winner's circle. Anyway, our day at the races was a lot of fun and well worth the 3 year wait.

In other eventful (but not-so-great) news of the weekend, Matt's grandfather passed away. It has been very sad. He was a great man, and Matt looked up to him a lot. I hadn't really gotten a chance to know him very well, but from the few times I was with him I could tell what a friendly and funny grandpa he was. He will be missed.

We also got callings in our new ward. Our ward is so tiny! But it seems like it will be a good ward and has a lot of friendly people in it. I got called as a Primary teacher. I will be teaching the 5 and 6-year-olds. I don't quite know how I feel about that. I teach college kids...how am I going to teach 5-year-olds???!! Plus, I am nervous that I won't get to know anyone in the ward because I will be in the Primary each week. So my circle of friends will consist of 5-year-olds. Even though I'm sure they will be adorable, I still want to make friends. Matt got called as a home teaching coordinator. He thinks it will be a lot of work, but it will be good because he will get to know a lot of families in the ward that way. It's definatley a change going from the singles ward to this little family ward, but I hope it will be good.

Being in Primary is very hard. But maybe you can get to know the parents of the kids you teach and also, there's always visiting teaching. Don't forget to take the kids to the bathroom. Good Luck!

By the way, if you ever want to go to more horse races, they have a race track less than a mile down the road from my house. It's not Wyoming Downs, but they still have races and stuff. You're always welcome to come visit next summer.
